Dryer Vent Length & Routing Calculator

Estimate the effective dryer exhaust duct length after accounting for elbows. This tool uses the fitting-equivalent lengths in the 2021 International Residential Code / International Mechanical Code as a screening baseline.

Important: this is not a permit or code-compliance determination. Dryer manufacturer instructions, approved power ventilators, local amendments, building type, and the actual fitting geometry can change the allowable route.

Fittings

Use the closest fitting description you know. If you do not know the radius/style, use the conservative 4-inch-radius mitered values.

How the 35-Foot Dryer Vent Rule Works

The 2021 International Residential Code and International Mechanical Code use a specified-length method with a maximum dryer exhaust duct length of 35 feet from the connection to the dryer transition duct to the outlet terminal. Fittings reduce that allowance according to their equivalent length.

For a common 4-inch-radius mitered fitting, the table assigns 2.5 feet to a 45-degree elbow and 5 feet to a 90-degree elbow. Larger-radius smooth fittings have smaller equivalent-length penalties.

Example

A 20-foot straight duct with two 4-inch-radius mitered 90-degree elbows has an effective length of approximately 30 feet: 20 ft straight + 5 ft + 5 ft. Under the basic 35-ft method, that leaves about 5 ft of allowance.

Manufacturer Instructions Can Change the Maximum

The code also allows the maximum duct length to be determined by the clothes-dryer manufacturer's installation instructions. If the manufacturer provides its own fitting-equivalent calculations, use the applicable instructions for that model rather than assuming the generic table controls.

What About Dryer Booster Fans?

Do not treat an ordinary booster fan as a workaround for an over-length route. Current ICC provisions distinguish listed dryer exhaust duct power ventilators, which must be installed according to their manufacturer instructions, from prohibited ordinary domestic booster fans.

Transition Duct Behind the Dryer

The flexible/semi-rigid transition duct connecting the dryer to the permanent exhaust duct is treated separately. The 2021 IRC baseline limits this transition duct to 8 feet and says it must not be concealed within construction.

Dallas Code Context

The City of Dallas currently lists the 2021 International Mechanical Code and 2021 International Residential Code with Dallas amendments among its adopted construction codes. The city's current-code page states that the 2021 ICC codes became effective May 12, 2023.

This calculator uses the 2021 ICC dryer-exhaust fitting table as a screening baseline. For an actual installation, alteration, permit, inspection, or dispute, verify the current Dallas requirement and the dryer manufacturer's instructions.
