Dryer Vent Risk & Clog Checker
Is your dryer taking too long, getting unusually hot, or showing signs of restricted airflow? Answer these questions to see whether the pattern looks more like routine maintenance, possible vent restriction, or a stop-use safety concern.

What Counts as a Dryer Vent Warning Sign?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says clothing that remains damp after a typical cycle or takes longer than normal to dry can indicate a blocked lint screen or exhaust duct. It also recommends checking the outside vent while the dryer is operating to make sure exhaust air is escaping.
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends keeping the dryer vent ductwork clean, checking the venting system for damage or restriction, and making sure the outdoor vent covering opens during operation.
Why Restricted Airflow Matters
Lint can build up in the dryer and exhaust duct, restrict airflow, and contribute to excessive heat. USFA reports that failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to ignition in home clothes-dryer fires in its 2018–2020 fire data.
How Often Should the Dryer Vent Be Cleaned?
USFA advises cleaning dryer vent ductwork every year. A household may need attention sooner if drying time increases, airflow weakens, the route is long or complex, or the vent becomes obstructed.

Roof Dryer Vents
A roof termination is not automatically clogged, but it can be harder for a homeowner to inspect safely. Do not climb onto a roof just to test the vent. If you cannot safely verify airflow from the ground or another appropriate location, use an inspection or service provider.

Cleaning vs. Repair
Cleaning will not fix a crushed connector, disconnected duct, damaged exterior cap, incorrect vent material, or another physical defect. If the vent route is damaged or improperly configured, the appropriate next step may be repair rather than additional cleaning.
