Do I Need Air Duct Cleaning? 60-Second Checker

Air ducts do not automatically need routine cleaning on a fixed schedule. This checker uses the same core conditions the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency highlights when deciding whether duct cleaning may be worth considering: substantial visible mold on hard HVAC surfaces, vermin, or excessive dust and debris that is clogging ducts or being released from supply registers.

No email is required. The checker runs in your browser and does not submit your answers as a service request.

Answer all 8 questions

Choose the answer that best matches what you can actually observe. “Not sure” is a valid answer.

1. Can you see substantial growth that looks like mold inside hard-surface ducts or on HVAC components?

Do not assume a dark spot is mold just from appearance.

2. Is fiberglass or other duct insulation wet, water-damaged, or visibly moldy?
3. Is there evidence of rodents, insects, nesting material, droppings, or another pest problem in the duct system?
4. Are ducts visibly clogged with excessive dust/debris, or are particles actually blowing from supply registers?
5. Was there recent construction or remodeling while the HVAC system was running or registers were left uncovered?
6. Is there a known moisture problem, water leak, condensation issue, or musty odor when the HVAC system runs?
7. Is the main reason you are considering cleaning simply that “it has been a few years”?
8. Is the main reason a general allergy, asthma, or health claim without visible contamination or another confirmed duct problem?

How This Checker Makes the Decision

The checker intentionally does not use a generic score such as “7/10 means you need cleaning.” EPA does not recommend routine duct cleaning for every home. Instead, it highlights specific conditions where cleaning may be worth considering: substantial visible mold growth on hard HVAC surfaces, vermin, and excessive dust or debris that clogs ducts or is actually released from supply registers.

EPA also notes that wet or moldy fiberglass duct material cannot simply be treated like ordinary hard-surface ductwork; the moisture problem must be corrected and affected material may need replacement.

What This Tool Cannot Tell You

  • It cannot confirm that a substance is mold from appearance alone.
  • It cannot diagnose health symptoms or tell you whether ducts are causing them.
  • It cannot inspect hidden ductwork.
  • It cannot determine whether a particular contractor's proposed scope or price is reasonable.
  • It does not replace an appropriate HVAC, pest-control, mold, or building professional when those issues are involved.

EPA states that duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems and that light household dust in ducts, by itself, is not evidence of a health risk.

If the Checker Says “Cleaning May Be Justified”

Do not jump directly from the result to the cheapest advertised special. Ask the provider to show you the condition that justifies cleaning, explain which HVAC components are included, identify any underlying moisture or pest source, and provide a written scope.

If the Checker Says “Inspect First”

Inspection first is not the same as “you need cleaning.” It means your answers contain uncertainty—such as recent construction, a moisture concern, or an unverified contamination claim—that should be checked before you pay for a cleaning service.

If you are in the Dallas area and want to describe the property and symptoms, you can request a local service quote. The actual provider should confirm the scope, price, credentials, and availability directly with you.
